How we feed the street dogs on Koh Samui

•

Claire Murray

Every day, we feed 800 street dogs on the island of Koh Samui. It’s a lot of dogs and people often ask us how we get to them all, or how we know we’ve fed everyone.

So here’s a little overview of how we feed these gorgeous dogs day in and day out.

Preparing the street dogs' food

We’d love to be able to say we do all the feeding ourselves. But we’re just a small team of people who organize the food, look after the dogs at the land, organize medical treatment, and oversee adoptions.

So instead, we have an amazing team of people who work with us, preparing the food (and delivering it but more on that later…)

The food is prepared in huge quantities by a lovely lady called Pi Fa. She and her team cook up this food fresh every day and our helpers drop by to pick up the food for their rounds.

‍

What do street dogs eat?

Because we have such an amazing team, we’re able to feed all 800 dogs healthy, home-cooked food for a fairly low price. We don’t feed them kibble or raw food, instead cooking up our own recipe that ensures they get all the nutrients they need and that keeps them full all day.

Want to recreate it at home? Here’s the recipe for 1kg…

  1. Minced chicken - 0.15kg
  2. Chicken blood - 0.17kg
  3. Carrots - 0.18kg
  4. Pumpkin 0.14kg
  5. Cabbage - 0.08kg
  6. Eggs - 3
  7. Coconut oil
  8. Rice - 0.29kg

‍

Feeding the street dogs

Each of our helpers has their own route where they feed the dogs. The Happy Doggo team personally feed 80-100 street dogs every day. We start off by grabbing a big bag of food delivered freshly every day and hopping on our scooters. Only the best for the best boys and girls!

‍

It's not just about the food

On our rounds, the main thing we do is feed the dogs. But there are also other health considerations to take into account.

Sometimes we’ll go to a spot and a dog will be missing. Often they’ve just went on a little adventure or are sleeping it off. But we’ll make a mental note, especially for the ones who never miss a meal, and have a proper look for them if they don’t appear for the next mealtime.

If you follow us online, you’ll likely have seen the videos of dogs chasing after the bikes, excited we’ve arrived. Often, the reason they’re so excited is that they just want some pats. Street dogs have the capacity to love just like pet dogs and for many of them, the belly rubs are as important as the full belly.

‍

Special treat days for the street dogs

Not every day is a rice day. Variety is the spice of life so we like to give the street dogs treat days too. We'll bring them things like homemade fried chicken, ice cream, or even a big Christmas dinner in the festive period. Some days we'll even bring them toys.

After all, everyone deserves a cheat Friday!
